What Do Explosive Ordnance Disposal Companies Actually Do?

As an explosive ordnance disposal company, we are often asked what exactly is it we do, especially when we are recruiting for support staff who are required for their special skills to integrate with an otherwise technical team.

The short answer is that we manufacture the machines that deal with unexploded devices in a controlled way. This can be done by use of flails or tillers which cause unexploded ordnance to either explode or shatter so that the fuse is separated from the main charge. Alternatively mechanical rotors or tines can be used to extract buried items to the surface, including unexploded ordnance, so that it can be dealt with by explosive ordnance disposal experts.

But what exactly does that mean?
After all, we have all seen the movies, where the handsome hero leaves cutting the correct wire right until the last second in order to save the day. But not all EOD is like this.

Are we superhero’s?
No, of course not, but we do like to think that the EOD machines we make help our real life hero’s remain safe, and also help the communities living in areas contaminated with unexploded devices feel safer in the knowledge that our mine clearing machines will help to keep them and their families safe.

Our machines are just that. Machines. The hero’s are the men and women who use the machines, who risk their lives by entering these high risk areas. Our demining machines help by keeping them at arm's length using robots, heavy duty machines and mechanical demining equipment instead of getting up close to the threat and carrying out manual explosive ordnance disposal techniques..
